Tattoo locations that need careful consideration

and will most likely need to be touched up:

Wrists - Hands - Fingers - Elbows - Feet - Behind the Ear

There is no guarantee how tattoos will heal in the first place, but especially in these locations.  It doesn't matter how many tattoos you have had in the past or if you've had them in similar spots on different limbs - there is no telling how they will heal.

More Details:

Areas of the body respond differently when tattooed and some areas don't take ink well.  Some get stretched too much during the healing process.  Some fade easily.  Some areas of skin continually shed.

Some people are fortunate and this doesn't affect them...Yeah!  But that is not the normal response...Boooo!

Evan More Details:

Hand/Fingers:

The biggest issue?  You constantly use them!  They also shed a lot.  The constant use and shedding make it nearly impossible for the ink to stay solid.

Wrist (sides included):

This area is constantly stretching/pulling and it really effects the quality of the healing.  You also don't realize how often you lean on tables, counters, desks, steering wheels, etc.

Big no-nos ~ watches, wrist bands, bracelets, exercise bands, etc.  All the friction can rub the design away or pull out lines.

Elbow:

Very similar to wrists with the pulling/leaning.  Also, joints tend to not heal as well as other areas of the body.

Feet and Ankle:

Lots of friction from socks, shoes, sheets/blankets, etc.  Tattoos in this area can fade, lose color easily and lose linework.

Tips to try, but no guarantee:

No closed shoes or socks.

Try to stay off your feet for the rest of the day of your tattoo.

If swollen, apply an ice pack (do not soak).

Also, cover-ups tend to not hold well on feet and

usually need a second session.

Behind the Ear:

The skin is thin and "smooshy", making it prone to fading and losing color.  Hair products, hair washing, sleeping on your side and cell phone use all lend to fading and losing color.

Side Note:

We do NOT recommend any petroleum based ointments ~ Aquaphor, A&D, Vaseline, etc.

Over the years, we have found that anything with a petroleum base is too thick and can pull the ink out.  Tattoos are wounds and should be treated as such.
